Mouth of the Pêgo stream

The meadows in the villages of Areosa and Carreço are crisscrossed by various watercourses perpendicular to the Atlantic coast. The most important of these due to its size is the Ribeiro de Pêgo which crosses the village of Areosa. The source of this river is located on the plateau of the Serra de Santa Luzia, at a height of approximately 500 metres. From here it travels roughly 2.2 km until it meets the Atlantic sea. A significant number of watermills flanks the margins of Ribeiro de Pêgo, close to Poço Negro, a natural weir and waterfall where the water is impounded to be led through small stone canals.

Other smaller watercourses are frequently named after their source location, such is the case with Fonte do Maganhão and Fonte da Porca which flow towards the Canto Marinho on the south and north side, respectively.
