Bird Observatory

The humid areas found along the margins of the Lima River shelter natural habitats and ecosystems which are an important haven for avifauna. A wide array of species may be spotted.

As far as terrestrial birds, the most interesting are the hippolais-polyglotta (Portuguese warbler), the mountain sparrow and the emberiza-cirlus (cirl bunting). Wild-nightingales, grey headed bull finch, red throats, great spotted woodpeckers, green woodpeckers and numerous species of tits may be admired in the riverside woodlands. Regarding aquatic birds, during the nestling season, it is possible to spot the regal duck, the small grebe, the water hen, herons and kingfisher. There are numerous winter sightings of the common teal, northern shovels, black ducks and breasted mergansers.
