Tower Quay

Traditional small boats known as “água-arriba” used to depart from the numerous anchorage spots located along the river allowing the connection between the two banks. They also played an important role in transporting people and goods to the two main markets in the Lima valley region: the Ponte de Lima and Viana markets.

The commercial distribution of wood and local sparkling wine (vinho verde) was dependent on the indispensable support of these boats. In a similar fashion, they transported salt, lime, fertilizers, sulphate and sulphur upriver to the farming communities.
