Petisco Windmill

Windmill in stonework built in the 19th century. The mill has a circular layout, the tower is covered with a cap which goes a bit beyond the diameter of the tower, forming a small eave. It has two stories with two windows, on above the door and the other on the opposite side. The roof or cap of the mill, made of wood, holds the four triangular cloth sails and can be turned into the wind with the aid of a tail pole. A common feature found on most windmills in the north of Portugal.

The mill hopper, a funnel-shaped (inverted pyramid) device where gain is placed to be milled, has small decorative details which are quite interesting from a cultural point of view. According to Jorge Dias, it may be characterised as belonging to the second category, set by Krüger, of stone Mediterranean windmills. It was recently restored by the owner who was concerned in preserving the original structure, more specifically in relation to the existing mechanisms and the actual design and architecture of the complete windmill. The mechanisms in the mill are still functional and the inscriptions on the door refer to the main dates of construction and renovation.

It has been classified as a National Interest Monument (Decree law no. 735/74, DG, 1st Serie no. 297 of 21 December 1974).
